Baby cockatiel crying:
Crying is a form of communication for birds, baby cockatiels included, these birds can’t talk to us but they sure will communicate their feelings when the time is right.
Here is why your baby cockatiel may be crying:
Begging for food:
Hand-raised birds will usually beg for food from you.
They know that you are their only source of food as they aren’t eating from food bowls, and they know that crying gets the attention and food that they want, so, they will cry at you to get some food when they are hungry
These birds may also beg for food if the food that is given to them isn’t their food preference. The birds would rather starve themselves than eat foods that they don’t want.
If your bird has an infection that causes them to be hungry all of the time then these birds can also cry out for food even if the bird is being given enough food
What to do:
If the bird is begging for food because you aren’t feeding the bird enough then you would need to increase how much food you’re feeding the bird.
These birds need to be fed according to their weight so weighing your bird in the morning to make sure that you serve the bird enough food is recommended.
If the foods that you give your birds are foods that they aren’t used to then you may have to eat the food in front of them and make a show out of expressing that the food is good, this may get the bird to eat
If this doesn’t work then giving the bird a different formula is another way to solve the situation.
Measure the bird daily to make sure that it is in fact increasing in size and is not stagnant when it comes to its growth and isn’t losing weight.
If you think that your bird has some sort of infection that is causing them to be hungry all of the time then taking the bird to the vet for a check-up is recommended.
Begging for attention:
Another reason why the bird may be making these crying noises is that the bird is begging for attention.
These birds enjoy socializing with you and with other birds, they also need to socialize to stay healthy, they are intelligent birds that need to be stimulated
The birds will cry as a way of getting your attention and getting you to interact with it. If the bird is used to crying and you picking it up, then it may learn that crying will get it attention from you
What to do:
If you aren’t spending time with the bird then spend time with it on daily basis to keep it satisfied.
However, if the bird is asking to be played with too much, then you can leave the bird alone to cry and not pick it up, this will teach the bird that crying will not always equal attention from you.
