Brown Spot On Parakeets Beak (3 Reasons Why + What To Do)

Any new development on your bird will make any bird owner very concerned, this includes something as small as a brown spot developing on your parakeet’s beak.

This article is a look into why your parakeet has a brown spot on its beak.

Brown spot on parakeets beak:

Your parakeet’s beak can change for a variety of reasons, below are reasons why your parakeet’s beak may suddenly develop a brown spot.

A wear mark:

If your bird develops a brown spot on its beak then the spot may be a wear mark from the bird constantly rubbing its beak against the cage or perch.

Your bird may for some reason be rubbing its beak on its perch or cage, to a point where it is causing some damage to its beak, and this damage will show up as a wear mark on your bird’s beak.

What to do:

This is not normal behavior, while the beak does need to be worn down to maintain its shape and size, if this is done too much then the beak may start to show signs of too much wear and tear, ie: the brown spot.

You’d need to take your bird to the vet to have the bird examined and to have the bird diagnosed, and treated, if need be.

It’s a bruise:

Another reason why your bird’s beak may have a brown spot on it is that the beak is bruised.

Your bird may have fought with another bird and developed a bruise on its beak, crashed into a window, or fell onto the floor beak first and developed a bruise on its beak.

The bird has blood vessels in its beak so an injury will cause these blood vessels to become damaged and leak blood forming a bruise.

What to do:

If the bruise is not too severe, then you don’t have anything to worry about. You’ll know that the bruise is not severe as the bird will be able to eat normally and perform everyday activities as normal.

The bruise will travel down the bird’s beak as the beak continues to grow and it will be filed off as the bird goes about its normal everyday activities, note this can take a few months

If the bird is struggling to eat and seems to be in pain then you’d need to take your bird to the vet who will prescribe pain medications for the bird

Liver disease:

Your bird’s beak could have a brown spot or patch on it because the bird has liver disease, fatty liver disease to be specific.

Birds who are fed a diet that is mainly seed based have a high chance of contracting this condition. This condition causes an accumulation of fat on the liver and the liver loses its ability to function properly.

This condition also causes blood clots to develop throughout your bird’s body and one place that this may be happening is the bird’s beak.

Other signs of liver issues in your bird include wet droppings, black toenails, toenails that don’t grow normally, a beak that doesn’t grow normally, increased regurgitation, vomiting, and breathing difficulties to name a few.

What to do:

This illness can be treated if caught early enough. You’d need to take your bird to the vet who will run tests on the bird to determine if the bird does have fatty liver.
