Budgie Flying Back And Forth In Cage (2 Reasons Why + What To Do)

Budgies can be curious animals, they can express behaviors that are quite odd to us, some of these behaviors are actually normal budgie behavior and some of the behavior is not.

This article is a look into why your budgie is flying back and forth in its cage.

Budgie flying back and forth in the cage

Humans will walk back and forth, and pace, when we are worried about something, but do budgies fly back and forth in the cages for the same reason? Here is why this happens:

Anxious:

Humans aren’t the only animals that can be anxious, birds, like your budgies, can too.

If your budgies are calm when out of the cage but start to fly back and forth when they are inside the cage then the bird may simply become anxious when you leave them alone in the cage.

This may happen because the bird feels insecure or frightened without you and thus want to always be with you or will fly back and forth if not around you.

What to do:

The bird will learn to get used to being alone by itself but this will only happen if you give the bird alone time.

Spending time alone, and not being harmed in any way during this time, will help the bird realize that it is actually safe and doesn’t need to worry or fly back and forth.

Bored in the cage:

A bird that is flying back and forth may be doing this because it is bored and is simply trying to entertain itself.

The bird likely built up a lot of pent-up energy and needs to be released from the cage to use up some of the energy.

Flying back and forth in the cage is only one way to use up energy but it isn’t an efficient way to do this.

The natural tendency of humans and animals who feel bored is to walk or fly back and forth. This at least offers some stimulation to the bird.

If you don’t let the bird out of the cage then it may start to suffer some mental deterioration.

What to do:

If the bird is bored then you may want to let the bird out of the cage as well as give the bird new toys to play with to stimulate it.

These birds are very social animals, they enjoy socializing and enjoy being outside of the cage. Help the bird combat its boredom by letting it out of its cage for about an hour or two to satisfy its need to socialize.

Doing this will also stimulate the bird’s mind. You can also stimulate the bird’s mind by giving the bird new toys to play with if its current toys are old

You may also want to consider getting a bigger cage for the bird to fly around in, this will enable it to fly more freely while still being contained.

If you do choose to let the bird out make sure that you let the bird out in a bird-safe environment, make sure there are no chemicals open that the bird can get to, and make sure that your stoves are off.

Also, make sure that the doors and windows in the room are also closed.

The bird will start flying frantically when let out but will go back to flying like normal once it gets the hang of it. It will then go back to its cage once it is tired.
