Conure Beak Cracking (3 Reasons Why + What To Do)

Your conure’s beak is one of your bird’s strongest body parts, this body part is meant to be strong, smooth, symmetrical, and solid, and it should not have any cracks in it, but cracks do sometimes develop on your bird’s beak.

This article is a look at why your conure’s beak is cracking.

Conure beak cracking:

Your bird uses its wings, feet, and beak for a variety of things including eating and communicating. The beak is quite important to your bird, your bird’s everyday routine wouldn’t go as well without it.

Knowing this, damage to the break will be concerning even if it is simply a small crack.

This is what you need to know if your bird’s beak is cracking:

The structure of the beak:

Your conure’s beak, just as with the beak of any other bird, is made up of an inner bony skeletal layer and an outer layer of keratin.

Human fingernails are also made up of keratin and just like human fingernails the beak is always growing, needs to be worn down, and can break.

The bony part of your bird’s beak can also break but a lot more force is needed to crack this part of the beak.

Here is why the keratin on your bird’s beak may have a crack in it:

Normal growth:

While beak growth is normal, this process can cause the bird’s beak to crack. If you’re raising a young baby conure and its beak is cracking as it grows this is normal and is nothing to worry about.

What to do:

You don’t have to worry or do anything in this case The bird’s beak will renew itself and repair the cracks as the bird grows.

Just keep an eye on your bird as it grows and as its beak grows, if the bird is in pain or uncomfortable during its beak growth then you should be concerned and may need to take the bird to the vet.

Malnourishment:

Your conure’s diet will be a very big determining factor on whether the bird will be healthy or not. One sign of an unhealthy bird is the cracking of the bird’s beak.

What to do:

You may need to change what your bird is eating if you think that the bird is malnourished, the bird may need different pellet feed if the bird is not eating the pellet feed that is being given.

If the bird is eating, but nutrients aren’t being absorbed, then you may need to take the bird to the vet as the bird’s body may not be absorbing the nutrients in the food.

Trauma:

Trauma to the beak can be another reason why your bird’s beak may be cracking. The injury or the impact could have been so strong that it caused a crack in the beak of an otherwise healthy bird.

Injuries can happen if your bird gets into a fight with another bird, if the bird knocks into a ceiling fan, if the bird falls and falls onto its beak, and if the bird flies into a window or glass door.

What to do:

Depending on how severe the crack on your bird’s beak is, the bird may be able to heal the crack on its own. If the crack is severe, then you may have to take the bird to the vet.

Cracked beaks that are still one piece and that are minor will usually heal on their own.

The beaks of young conures will likely heal on their own, but, older conure beaks may need more help healing.

If you’re not sure of what to do then take your conure to the vet.
