Can Chickens Eat Eucalyptus Leaves? Risks and Signs of Poisoning

Humans have many uses for eucalyptus leaves. These leaves have anti-fungal and antiseptic properties. They may be beneficial when used topically, but are poisonous to humans and many animals when ingested.

One animal that can eat eucalyptus leaves, and is well known for eating these leaves, is the koala. Koalas have evolved to be able to eat these leaves without being poisoned by the toxins in the plant.

Chickens cannot eat eucalyptus leaves, in fact, many animals cannot eat eucalyptus leaves. Eucalyptus leaves contain toxins that can cause chickens to become sick and even die. The leaves can also carry Aspergillosis spores which can cause a fungal infection in the bird 

Can chickens eat eucalyptus leaves? 

It is important that chickens eat a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, and grains. This will keep the bird healthy and happy. Eucalyptus does not fall under any of these categories and chickens don’t need it, in fact, chickens cannot eat it.

Signs of prussic acid poisoning in animals include salivation, labored breathing, seizures, diarrhea, vomiting, staggering, weakness, confusion, and collapse

The leaves can also carry Aspergillosis spores, these spores can cause the chicken to develop a fungal infection. 

Signs that your chicken is suffering from this infection is gasping for breath, eye lesions, drowsiness, thirst, a loss of appetite, rapid breathing, silent gasping, and weakness 

Chickens will ignore this plant

Chickens not being able to eat this plant is not a disaster. These birds can usually tell which foods are edible and which arent, because of this, the bird will usually ignore the plant.

If the chicken does try to eat the plant, it will quickly drop them as these plants taste horrible.

Can chickens take eucalyptus oil? 

Chickens cannot take eucalyptus oil either, they cannot have it whether the bird ingests it or if the oil is applied to the bird’s skin.

Using a diffuser to distribute the oil through the air is not a good idea either.

Diffusing water droplets, that contain eucalyptus essential oil, into the air is also not recommended as the birds can inhale the droplets and develop negative respiratory effects.

Companies may sell eucalyptus essential oil-infused products for chickens but the risk of using these products outweigh the benefits

In conclusion, no, chickens cannot eat eucalyptus leaves, eucalyptus leaves are toxic to not only chickens but to a variety of other pets and animals as well.

Eucalyptus essential oil, whether applied to the chicken’s skin, fed in feed, or used in a diffuser, is also not recommended for chickens. Animals like koalas which have evolved to be able to eat these leaves can eat eucalyptus leaves
