Egg Peritonitis Natural Treatment (Does One Exist?: The Scoop)

No chicken farmer wants their bird to get sick, especially not from egg peritonitis. If this ailment is not treated in good time, and correctly, it can lead to the death of the bird.

If your bird has egg peritonitis and you’re looking to see if there are any natural treatments for this ailment, this article is for you

Egg peritonitis natural treatment:

The widely known, and given, treatment for egg yolk peritonitis is antibiotics. There are no verified natural remedies for this ailment.

While natural treatments for this ailment are said to not work, they may be helpful in addition to the antibiotics given by your vet,

Natural treatments like oregano and cinnamon, colloidal silver, and kali phos can be offered to birds who are suffering from egg peritonitis.

Oregano and cinnamon:

Oregano is known as a natural antibiotic that many have used to treat chickens rather than using traditional antibiotics. Oregano can be used in the form of oil, dried herbs, or fresh herbs but the oil is the most potent of the bunch.

This herb is both antifungal and antiviral and it helps strengthen the immune system. A substance in oregano called Carvacrol and a compound called thymol gives this herb its immune-strengthening, antifungal, and antiviral properties.

Colloidal silver:

This treatment can be used on humans and chickens all the same. It helps prevent skin infections, combat inflammation, and treat skin wounds in humans and, it can be used to reduce swelling in chickens.

You can spray this treatment on your chicken’s vent twice a day to reduce the swelling in that area. A spray with a stronger concentration, perhaps 10ppm parts per milliliter will be very helpful. If you can get a stronger dose, then this would be even beter.

Kali phos

This natural medication can also be used to treat birds who are suffering from egg peritonitis. To treat, prepare one 6c tablet suspended in one teaspoon of soy milk and syringe this treatment into your bird’s mouth once a day.

This given to your birds daily will prevent egg peritonitis as it relaxes the fimbril. The fimbril is the opening of the oviduct, when the yolk is released, the fimbril catches the yolk.

If the fimbril is tense, it won’t catch the yolk, this leads to the yolk moving into the bird’s abdominal cavity and causing egg yolk peritonitis

Note: Treatment of egg peritonitis using natural or commercial products will likely not be successful if the bird has been suffering from this ailment for quite some time.

If you catch the disease later on, then it’s likely that neither natural nor commercial products will help in treating your bird.

This ailment is usually life-threatening, if you see that your bird is not recovering after being given at home treatments then you’d need to opt for surgery

During surgery, the vet will make an incision at the bird’s chest to access the mass and then remove this mass from the area. Antibiotics will still be needed even after surgery to prevent infection, supportive care will also be needed

Is egg peritonitis contagious?

Thankfully, egg peritonitis is not contagious, you don’t have to worry that one of your birds will transfer this ailment to your other birds.

Is egg yolk peritonitis painful?

As much as animals, chickens included, try their best not to show that they’re in pain (a show of pain in the wild makes animals targets to predators so all animals avoid doing this) birds that have egg peritonitis do act like they are in pain.

You can help the bird with its pain by asking your vet for bird-friendly pain killers, there are quite a lot of these available.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, egg peritonitis is quite a severe ailment that can affect your chickens, if not treated correctly then your bird can die.

Natural remedies may be preferred, but antibiotics will most likely be needed for the bird to stay alive. Care in the form of oregano and cinnamon, colloidal silver, and kali phos may also come in handy.

If the ailment is severe, then the bird may need surgery to remove the mass and antibiotics afterward.
