Lethargic quail chick:

It doesn’t take a lot for a quail to be entertained, these birds can make almost anything a toy and can be found running around all day.

Here is why your quail chick may be acting lethargic:

The bird is sick:

If your quail chick is lethargic then the bird is likely sick. These birds are hearty birds who don’t usually develop major health issues, but, unfortunately for them and for us, these birds can still get sick.

Many illnesses that quail chicks get have lethargy as a symptom. The bird’s other symptoms will give a clear picture of what the bird is sick with.

Other signs of a quail chick being sick include a change in eating habits, difficulty breathing, changes to the bird’s color, discharge from the beak, eyes or nares, droopy wings, fluffy-looking wings, and lethargy are all signs of an ill bird.

The bird will try its best to not show that it is sick and will mask other signs of being sick as best as it can.

These birds, and other birds, have the instinct to hide signs of being sick in injured as signs of being sick would attract predators.

The sick chick will also become weak and lethargic because they are trying to conserve energy as their bodies fight against illness. Your sick bird may be found huddled in a corner.

It is important to recognize and addresses the bird’s illness as quickly as you can as some illnesses can kill your bird if left untreated.

What to do:

If you suspect that your bird is sick then it is suggested that you isolate the bird to keep it from infecting others. Give the bird its own feeders and waterers while it is in isolation

Taking your bird to the vet is recommended, your bird may be suffering from any number of illnesses.

You may be able to diagnose the bird yourself but this may take a lot of time and you may still have to get your bird to the vet for treatment so taking the bird to the vet as soon as possible is recommended.

The bird is overheating:

Another of the reasons why your burd may be lethargic may be that the bird is overheating.

If you’re raising quail chicks, you may have given them a heat plate or a heat lamp to keep them warm, but the only way the birds can communicate that they are overheating is by being lethargic.

What to do:

You can test if overheating is the reason why your bird is acting lethargic by bothering them.

A healthy bird will immediately get up and gasp when you bother it, if it doesn’t do this then this may mean that the bird is overheating.

Move your bird away from the heat source and see if it starts to act naturally after this. Offering the bird cold water and refrigerated snacks should also help with the overheating.
