My budgie’s beak is turning blue:
Budgies can’t talk so how the bird looks and acts are usually the only indicators of what is going on inside of the bird. If there is a sudden change in your bird’s appearance or behavior this means that there is something going on with the bird.
Here is what may be going on with your budgie that has a blue beak:
Age:
Different birds start to look different as they age, this may be what is happening with your bird, young budgies will have a cere and beak that is a rose color but as the bird ages, this starts to change.
As the birds mature they start to change in appearance, males in the animal kingdom are usually the ones who are more colorful, they are more colorful and beautiful as this is needed to attract a female.
This can be seen in the bright wing colors of the males and the less bright and vibrant wing colors of the female.
Female budgie ceres will be brown and the ceres of males will turn a vibrant blue, or will be a deeper blue in color. This bright blue color signals to the female that he is ready to reproduce.
The changing of the male budgies’ cere changes the color of the beak internally and this may be why your budgie’s beak looks like it is turning blue.
What to do:
You don’t have to do anything in this scenario, this is a normal process and as long as the bird is acting normal and doesn’t seem to be in distress then the bird will be fine.
The bird’s beak will eventually turn one color and won’t be so patchy.
Cyanosis:
Another reason why your budgie’s beak may be turning blue may be because the bird may be cyanotic.
Cyanosis is the bluish coloring of the bird’s beak and this can develop if the bird develops breathing problems.
It can also develop if the bird has an infection, if the bird is in shock, if the bird is suffering from lung disease or if the bird is suffering from heart disease.
The bird’s beak, face, skin neck, and tongue can turn blue if it is suffering from respiratory distress this blue color develops because there is a lack of oxygen in the blood
What to do:
Taking your bird to the vet is recommended.
If you can’t immediately get to the vet then keep the bird in a hospital cage until you can get the bird to the vet.
Ensure that the hospital cage has soft towels at the bottom, use a heating pad and set it at low or medium and place this heating pad in the bird’s cage, also, keep food and water in the cage but don’t force the bird to eat or drink.
The vet will find the root cause of this respiratory problem and give medication to treat the bird’s illness.
The bird’s beak color should go back to normal if the bird responds well to the medication and the birds breathing should get back to normal as well.
