My mallard duck flew away will it come back?
Ducks do fly away, and mallard ducks flying away is actually more common than you think, these birds come back in some cases but they don’t in others:
When birds come back:
If the birds don’t fly away too far:
One of the reasons why ducks will fly away in the first place is if the birds fly away on accident. The birds may wander off while playing with each other and fly away or they may be trying to escape a predator and fly away.
If the birds know how to get home and don’t fly away too far then the bird will make its way back to you either on the same day or the next day if the birds have flown quite far.
If home is better off:
Ducks have a natural instinct to fly away, but they also have a natural instinct to survive.
If your bird is domesticated but gives into its urge to fly away, but realizes that the grass is greener on your property where it is given food and a safe place to live, then the bird may come back to you, assuming that it knows its way back home that is.
When they don’t:
If the birds can’t find their way home:
One reason why a duck will fly away in the first place is if it escapes a predator or if the birds are playing around and fly off too far from home.
These birds can get lost while trying to escape a predator and may not know how to get home. The birds may also be playing with other ducks, fly away too far, and then not be able to get themselves back.
Birds in this position will have to fend for themselves and if they don’t know how to get back home or fend for themselves then they will starve to death out in the wild.
If they find greener pastures elsewhere:
One reason why a duck may choose to leave your care and fly away is if the bird doesn’t feel that it is getting enough food on your property and decides to look for food and greener pastures elsewhere.
Domesticated ducks are usually dependent on you for food but if your ducks know how to forage then the birds just might choose to fend for themselves out there, and if successful at it, the birds will stay in the new area that they find.
If they get attacked by a predator:
Ducks may fly away from your care and as quickly as they leave they may be attacked and killed by a predator.
Ducks aren’t exactly great at self-defense, their only form of defense is flying away from predators, if the bird tries to fly away but a predator catches it then the bird will end up as predator food.
