Parakeets Mating But No Eggs (3 Reasons Why + What To Do)

Reproduction and producing offspring is one of the primary goals of all anim.

If two different gendered animals of the same species are housed together then they will likely mate and produce offspring.

This article is a look into why your parakeets are mating but are not producing eggs

Parakeets mating but no eggs:

Many bird owners don’t want their birds to mate but many bird owners do.

If you’ve housed a male and a female bird, who are compatible and who are bonded together, then they will more than likely mate and produce offspring, but this doesn’t always happen, this is why:

They are taking their time:

Even if the birds are mating, and all the environmental factors are correct, if the birds have access to the best food, enough space, are a bonded pair, have privacy, are at the right age to mate, and have access to nest boxes the birds may still not be producing eggs.

One of the main things that you need as a bird owner who is trying to get your birds to mate is patience. The birds may need some time before they start producing eggs even if they have already mated.

What to do:

As long as you’ve set up the right conditions for the mated pair the birds will eventually mate with each other and produce eggs, assuming that the birds are healthy enough and are at the correct age.

However, they will do this on their own time.

You’d just have to wait for the birds to do this and be patient, there is nothing more that you can actually do in this case.

Just make sure that the female is given extra protein and calcium to trigger her hormones and cause her to want to mate and produce eggs

Age:

If your female bird is too old then she will not produce eggs anymore, even if she is still mating with the male bird.

A hen only has a set number of eggs that she is born with and she can’t produce any more than this.

As she ages, her fertility starts to go down. This will happen gradually until she isn’t able to produce any eggs anymore and will stop laying completely.

What to do:

If the female bird is too old to lay eggs there isn’t anything you can do to help her lay more eggs.

The older female bird will have to be replaced with a younger female bird who can reproduce with your male and produce some eggs for you.

When choosing a younger female bird for your male bird, it is important to make sure that the pair are compatible, if they aren’t compatible then they won’t mate in the first place.

Your two birds are of the same gender:

If the two birds are mating but are not producing eggs then your two birds may be of the same gender. Same-sex interactions do occur in birds but these acts will not result in eggs or offspring.

If no eggs are being produced then you may have two males, you likely don’t have two females because two females will mate, and will both produce eggs.

If this were to happen then both sets of eggs will be unfertilized and will thus not hatch.

What to do:

Find out if you’re raising two male birds rather than a male bird and a female bird. If you are raising two male birds then replace one male bird with a female bird who is ready to mate.
