Pigeon diarrhea home remedy:
Birds are wonderful animals to keep as pets, many people keep them as pets, but just as with any pet, you as the owner need to make sure that your birds are as healthy as can be.
When treating your bird you likely want to give the bird treatments that are easily accessible and homemade, here are homemade treatments you can give to your bird if it is suffering from diarrhea:
Electrolyte solution:
Serving electrolytes to your sick bird is one way of helping the bird get rid of, or at least reduce, the diarrhea that it is suffering from.
Electrolytes are basically a combination of salt and water.
Consuming a mixture of sugar salt and water will help your bird’s body absorb the excess fluids in its bowels more effectively thus getting rid of diarrhea.
If your bird has diarrhea then the bird is likely also quite tired ad has low energy, you can replenish the bird’s levels of energy without the bird having to eat too much and without negatively affecting the diarrhea by giving the bird electrolytes that have sugar in them.
You can give the bird ready mixed avian electrolytes from the pet store, Poly-Aid can also be given to your bird.
You can also serve your bird electrolytes that have been designed for livestock or people, or, if you can, you can make your own homemade electrolytes and give these to your bird.
You can make an electrolytes solution for your pigeon by mixing 2 c warm water 2 tbsp brown sugar, honey, or molasses, 1/2 tsp of salt, and 1/2 tsp of baking soda.
Combine all of these ingredients until all have dissolved and give them to your bird.
This mixture can be refrigerated and given later to your bird and you can serve it to your bird at full strength or give it to your bird dissolved.
Liviferm:
This is a pigeon-safe medication that you can get over the counter and can be given to your bird if it has diarrhea.
The medication will stabilize your bird’s intestinal flora getting your bird’s poop back to normal in no time.
The probiotic bacteria in these pills will get any bacteria in your bird’s gut under control and the B complex vitamins will stabilize your bird’s intestinal flora.
Change your bird’s diet:
While this is not a treatment for your bird’s diarrhea it is a way to get rid of the diarrhea. One cause of diarrhea in pigeons is vitamin deficiency.
If your birds aren’t getting a regular supply of vitamin A, B, E, and K, then diarrhea can develop. Combat this by supplementing these vitamins through foods or vitamin supplements.
Foods that are rich in these vitamins include carrots, fish, millet, wheat, corn, and barley. The better your birds eat the better their digestion will be.
Something to consider:
Diarrhea will make the bird lose a lot of water very quickly and cause the bird to start to become dehydrated, which is very bad for the bird.
While the above treatments will help, it is advised that you seek the advice of a vet as soon as possible as home remedies alone may not completely cure your bird.
Explain to the vet the bird’s history and the history of the bird’s diarrhea, this may help with the diagnosis and the treatment of your bird.
Your bird may be given antifungal or antibiotic medications if needed to treat their diarrhea.
