Red-Eared Slider Orange Mouth (A Guide)

Exotic pets are not common pets to raise but they have their perks. These pets come with their own quirks so raising them will be a fun and interesting experience nonetheless.

Quirks of raising a red heard slider include suddenly developing an oddly colored mouth. This article looks into why your red-eared slider has an orange mouth.

Red-eared slider orange mouth:

The tongue of a healthy red-eared slider is not all that different from the tongue of a human, the mouth of this animal is a light pink color and so is their tongue.

Here is why your pet’s tongue has gone from pink to orange:

Stained tongue:

Just as humans can stain our tongues when we eat food like beetroot your pet turtle’s tongue may become stained orange if it eats carrots

If your pet’s tongue only changes color to orange once you feed it some carrots then you can assume this vegetable is the culprit.

What to do:

You don’t have to worry if you see this happening with your pet, it is perfectly normal for this to happen to turtles.

If you are still worried about your pet then hold off on giving your pet carrots for a little bit. Keep an eye on your pet to see if its tongue changes back to pink.

If the tongue goes back to pink then this is a sign that this vegetable did indeed stain your pet’s mouth.

Note: While carrots are healthy snacks they do still contain high amounts of sugar so be careful not to feed your pet too many carrots. Allowing your pet to eat this food in moderation is fine.

What you should also keep in mind is the size of the carrots. When serving carrots to your pet make sure that your pet can handle them without choking.
