If your sun conure has red in its poop then this issue with the bird may be minor, like a diet change, or, something major like internal bleeding, this article looks into it.
Diet:
Birds are not like humans, when birds eat something their poop starts to resemble their diet.
If your bird eats a lot of food of a certain color, like red berries, then the bird’s poop will look redder than normal or even look completely red.
If you know that you’ve recently changed your bird’s diet then this is likely what is happening with your bird.
What to do:
Changes in your bird’s poop happening because of a change in your bird’s diet is nothing to worry about, this change in poop color does not point to an issue in your bird.
Simply change your bird’s diet back to what it previously was and see if the bird’s poop color goes back to normal, it usually will.
If the bird’s poop color does not change back to normal then take your bird to the vet for an examination.
Internal bleeding:
Internal bleeding is a very serious condition and your sun conure may be suffering from it. Internal bleeding may be the reason behind the red poop, not a change in diet.
Internal bleeding can happen if your egg laying conure has trouble egg laying and strains when laying causing bleeding.
Also, the egg may even break while in the bird’s body and the shell may slice the bird’s insides resulting in internal bleeding.
Internal bleeding can also happen if your sun conure has cancer in its gastrointestinal tract and the cancer starts to bleed.
If the bird has ulcers, these can cause the bird’s stomach lining to bleed too.
Lastly, the ingestion of toxins as well as an infection can also cause your sun conure to start to bleed internally and this internal bleeding can make your birds poop red.
What to do:
Internal bleeding is very dangerous for conures, these birds are very small and what seems like a little bit of bleeding to us can be a lot of bleeding to the bird.
Too much blood loss can kill the little bird so taking the bird to the vet is recommended in this situation.
The vet will run tests to diagnose the bird. Giving the vet a fecal sample will be helpful, the vet can quickly diagnose the underlying cause of the internal bleeding and offer treatment that will treat the bird and stop the bleeding.
Isolating the bird while you wait for your vet visit is also recommended this will keep any of your birds safe incase your bird has an infection.
