It’s in a bird’s nature to breed and lay eggs, reproducing and laying eggs is the primary objective of birds, but not all bird owners want to keep the eggs that birds lay.
This article looks into what to do if your bird lays eggs that are unwanted.
What to do with unwanted budgie eggs:
Laying eggs is as normal and as regular as eating and drinking for birds. They will do this even if you don’t want them to.
If your birds have laid eggs then you not only have to get rid of the eggs but you have to replace the eggs with fake eggs as well.
Removing the eggs:
Removing the eggs is as easy as breaking the eggs and throwing the eggs away in the garbage, it is recommended that you break the eggs and throw the bird’s eggs in the outside garbage as they can start to rot and smell bad
A bad egg will start to smell bad because bacteria will get into the egg and start to grow inside turning the inside of the egg into a foul liquid.
Gasses will also accumulate in the egg and this can cause the egg to ooze a honey/light brown colored liquid, or even worse, explode.
So, breaking and throwing the eggs out is the best course of action. You also need to replace the eggs with fake eggs.
Replacing the eggs:
Birds know when it’s time to breed and lay eggs, the birds know to breed when their environment allows.
Their environment allows when the days are long, this indicates to the birds that food will be abundant.
These birds will lay a clutch of about 4-6 eggs so simply removing one or two eggs and leaving the bird to its own devices won’t work, the bird will simply lay more. The eggs need to be removed and you’d need to place fake eggs in the nest as a replacement.
If you place fake eggs in the nest then the bird will sit on the fake eggs thinking that the fake eggs are her real eggs, wait for them to hatch, which they won’t, and the bird will eventually become bored with this process and abandon the eggs.
You can do this every time she lays more eggs
How to keep the bird from laying more eggs:
Remove the nesting box: These birds need nesting boxes to feel secure and safe enough to lay more eggs, remove the bird’s nesting box to keep egg-laying from happening
Reduce the amount of light: If you want the birds to think that there isn’t enough food to raise baby birds in, and thus ensure that the birds don’t lay, then you’d need to increase the hours that the birds are in the dark for, increase this to 14 hours of darkness a day.
Give low-calorie foods: High-calorie foods, like seed mixes, make the bird think that there will be enough food for her babies once she lays, give the bird more low-calorie foods in her diet, like leafy greens and veggies, to keep her from laying eggs
Rearrange her cage: Stress, like a change in her environment in the form of a rearranged cage or a moved cage, will cause the bird to not feel comfortable enough to lay eggs.
Rearrange the bird’s cage to keep her from laying eggs.
Keep males away: While female budgies can still lay eggs without a male present having a male present will encourage more egg-laying to happen, and these eggs will hatch into baby budgies.
Keep your budgie from laying by only giving them a friend of the same gender.
