Why are cockatoos so loud?
A cockatoo is a type of parrot, and similarly to other types of parrots, the cockatoo will constantly scream in a high-pitched tone to the dismay of many humans around them.
Here is why your cockatoos are so loud:
It’s in their nature:
The reason why a cockatoo is so loud is that they have evolved to be this loud, it’s in their nature.
These birds are used to screaming at each other in the wild, they are one of the loudest parrots. Being loud isn’t something they do to spite us, it is simply in their nature.
They have a high vocal range, the vocal range is how loud the bird’s voice can go, and they will use this without hesitation.
They can create screams of up to 135 decibels, which is almost as loud as a jet engine and their screams can be heard from 5 miles away or so
Unfortunately, this trait is still something that your domesticated birds will have and use even when they don’t need to.
The reason why these birds scream so loud is to get your attention, they can’t talk to us to get our attention so they will do the next best thing: they scream.
These birds needed to and have evolved to be loud in the wild to alert their friends, from threats or danger.
Thus, in this scenario, having loud voices and screaming as loudly as they could would surely get the attention of other birds.
How to keep these birds from being loud:
These birds scream to get your attention, the solution to this may be to not give the bird attention when it screams.
If you give them attention then the bird will learn that screaming will get your attention. Not giving the birds attention will teach the bird that screaming doesn’t always get them attention.
Simply ignore the bird when it is screaming. In time the bird will scream less.
The bird is loud because you’re loud:
These birds pick up on the things that we do and they learn to copy us. If you get excited when watching TV, and start screaming at the TV, then the bird will start to scream loudly as well just as you do
What to do:
If you don’t want your bird to pick this behavior up then you’d need to avoid screaming in front of your bird. The bird should only see you talking normally or talking softly when you’re around it.
What not to do:
Avoid punishing the birds for their loud screaming. The loud screaming is in their nature so this is to be expected, the screaming is all part of owning a cockatoo.
Also, if you give the bird negative reinforcement the bird will not recognize why it is being punished it will only see your punishments as you attacking it and threatening it and will grow scared of you and have anxiety around you.
