Why do tortoises like shoes?
Tortoises can confuse us humans, these animals have strange behaviors and seem to like a variety of strange things, like shoes.
Here is the reason why your pet tortoise may like shoes
Its mating season:
If your tortoise is a mature male, and it is mating season for the animal, then your pet may like and want to be around your shoes a lot because the tortoise wants to mate with your shoes
Tortoises can’t always tell the difference between random objects like rocks and shoes, from other tortoises, they see them as one and the same and will want to mate with them
If this is happening with your pet then your tortoise may circle your shoes, sniff your shoes, and even try to climb onto your shoes.
What to do:
This is normal behavior for tortoises, there isn’t anything that you can do to affect the animal’s hormones and make them not want to mate with your shoes.
Tortoises will start doing this as soon as they mature and once the mating season rolls around.
The only thing you can do in this case is to keep your shoes away from your tortoise so it doesn’t have a chance to mate with them.
You can leave your shoes out once the animal’s mating season is over.
