Why Does My Bird Bite My Hair? (1 Reason Why + What Do)

Your pet bird is likely one of the things that you love the most. You want to take care of it and make sure that all is well with it.

So, if your bird is biting your hair, you may think that all is not well. This article looks into why your bird bites your hair.

Why does my bird bite my hair?

Birds are a popular choice when it comes to pets to keep in the house, but birds can come with an odd set of behaviors, like biting your hair.

Here is why your bird is biting your hair:

Preening:

Birds preen themselves, preen other birds, and may preen you too.

Preening is a way of maintaining and cleaning the bird’s feathers.

If your bird starts biting at your hair, then this simply means that the bird is preening what it sees as your feathers.

The bird sees your hair as feathers and will try to get your hair looking straight and neat through preening.

This is actually great as it means that your bird not only loves you, it also means that the bird wants the best for you by keeping you clean.

The bird is nurturing the bond that it currently has with you by preening you.

Unfortunately, a downside to this is that the bird may clip some of your hair as it does this.

What to do:

You don’t have to worry or think that there is something wrong with the bird if it does this, there is nothing wrong with your bird

This is perfectly normal behavior for birds.

Your pet bird coming this close to you is reassuring as it means that the bird loves you.

If you want to stop this behavior then consider wearing a barrier on your hair to keep your bird from accessing the hair.

You can use a hat, scarf, or anything that will cover your hair.

Tieing your hair up may simply make the bird dig into your tied hair to try to preen you.

You can alternatively discourage this behavior by putting the bird in its cage for a small amount of time when it tries to preen you.

Removing the bird from your head, or shoulders, and putting the bird in its cage will communicate that you don’t approve of this behavior.

Tip:

If you choose to keep letting your bird bite your hair, avoid using too many hair products in your hair as the bird will ingest these as it bites and eats your hair.
