Why does my bird sleep in his food bowl?
Birds are known to sleep standing up, they look for and find a perch that is safe and secluded, attach their talons to the perch of choice, and sleep standing up.
Lying down is not natural for birds, but your bird may sometimes do this. This is why your bird sleeps in his food bowl:
They were eating:
If your bird was eating just before it started sleeping then it may have just fallen into its food bowl.
Birds love to eat but they can sometimes overdo it. If your birds overdo it then they may eat, get full and end up sleeping in the food bowl.
What to do:
This is not too much of an issue, there is likely nothing wrong if your bird is doing this, it simply fell asleep after getting full just as some humans do if they have the itis.
They need a sleeping pouch:
Birds and humans all have different personalities, while many birds enjoy sleeping on their perch, some birds will like to sleep elsewhere at bedtime and thus may turn their food bowl into a bed on purpose at night.
What to do:
Test this theory out by giving your bird a cozy and soft sleeping pouch to sleep in.
Remove the nest bowl when the bird isn’t around. It is recommended that you do this when the bird isn’t around or else the bird may attack you if it is already attached to the food bowl.
Hopefully your bird isn’t used to sleeping in its nest bowl already. If you do get the bird a sleeping pouch make sure that the bird doesn’t start chewing on the fibers.
Nesting:
If your male bird is actually a female bird then the bird may be nesting in the food bowl, birds like to nest in safe secluded areas that are enclosed and high up. This keeps them away from predators.
Depending on where you attach it, the food bowl just might be the perfect place for your bird to nest.
What to do:
Leaving your bird to nest in its food bowl isn’t necessarily bad but the bird will eventually poop in its food bowl and will lay eggs in the food bowl.
If this happens then the eggs may hatch, and the bird will still eat out of the food bowl.
If you don’t want this to happen then giving your bird nest boxes and removing the food bowl and giving the bird a different food bowl will help.
Serve your bird’s food in a food bowl too small for the bird to nest in, this will keep the bird out of there.
Also, be warned, if the bird is already attached to the food bowl and is using it as a nesting bowl then the bird may attack you when you move the food bowl so you may want to take precautions when doing this.
