Why does my bird yawn when I pet him?
Birds can express some odd behaviors that we as humans do not understand, like yawning when being pet. This is why your bird will do this:
The bird is enjoying it
Birds like being pet just as much as any other pet does, these animals enjoy being pet on their head, on their back, under their beak, and on their neck and they will yawn out of enjoyment when you pet them
What to do:
This is normal behavior and you don’t have to worry about your bird yawning when you pet your bird, the bird is simply enjoying the experience.
You can keep petting your bird and allowing the bird to yawn in enjoyment.
Cleaning the crop:
Another reason why a bird may be yawning may be that there is something stuck at the neck of the bird’s throat or crop.
If there is something stuck at the back of the bird’s throat then the bird would likely yawn when you pet him.
If you pet the bird around the bird’s neck then you may be stimulating the birds crop, this helps them clear the crop and the bird will yawn and clear its crop after being triggered by you
What to do:
Birds can clear their crops on their own and they usually do this on their own. They don’t need you to do this but your doing this doesn’t harm the bird in any way.
You can keep doing this or let the bird be.
