Why does my cockatiel sing to my feet?
How your cockatiel interacts with you can tell you a lot about how the bird feels about you.
This is why your cockatiel may sing to your feet:
The bird simply loves your feet:
We wouldn’t exactly call this a foot fetish but these birds certainly seem to enjoy being around feet, interacting with feet, and singing to feet.
The reason why your cockatiel will sing to your feet is that it sees your feet as a mate.
The bird likely sees you, and thus your feet, as one of its mates.
Birds singing is not done for enjoyment, it is done for survival or a purpose.
Birds will sing not only to defend their territory, they will also sing to woo their mates.
The singing would show a potential mate that this particular bird is in good health as the sounds of a song could carry across long distances, it’s a kind of courting.
What to do:
This is not something to be concerned about, it is normal.
If you want to stop this behavior then you can go somewhere else so the bird can’t sing to your feet.
This may not immediately stop the bird from singing to your feet but your leaving will make the bird understand that you don’t like this behavior.
You can also wear slippers or another type of closed shoe if you want to stop this behavior in your bird.
Your cockatiel doesn’t know that shoes and slippers go on top of feet so when they look for feet to sing to there will be no feet to sing to.
The bird will only sing to your feet for a little while before it starts to wander off. Expect the bird to sing to your feet for about 5 to 10 minutes, it will stop and leave your feet alone after this.
If you want to keep the bird from showing any breeding behavior then you can try to cover the bird’s cage for more time in a day.
Breeding behavior in cockatiels, ie: singing and courting your feet, is performed during the long summer days when there is more light outside.
You can mimic the shorter winter days by simply covering the bird’s cage for longer during the day.
You can also give your bird a new friend, or a toy, that it can woo instead of your feet.
