Why does my turtle pee on me?
Having your turtle pee on you will not only be very confusing, but it will be very concerning too, why does the animal do this?
Here is why your turtle may pee on you:
They are scared:
Turtles are prey animals, they think that almost anything is a predator, including you, and they are afraid of a lot of things too
When you pick a turtle up it will become scared and it will pee on you as a result. These animals can’t run away from you, or fight back, so one of the only things they can do is pee on you.
That being said, if poop does not come out with the “pee” then your pet isn’t peeing on you, it is releasing water. Your pet is releasing the water that is stored in its cloaca, your pet is not peeing on you.
These animals don’t actually urinate, they release their “pee” their uric acid, along in their poop.
So, if there is poop coming out then yes you’re getting peed on, and pooped on, but if there is no poop then it’s just water
These animals see you as a giant predator, even though you are not growling and roaring at them like other predators. Nonetheless, releasing water is a sign that the animal is very nervous.
What to do:
Don’t drop the animal when it does this, calmly and gently place the animal back in the tank and then clean up
The turtle doesn’t like being picked up, it’s unnatural for it, so avoid doing it.
Turtles also don’t like interacting with what they see as a giant monster in their eyes.
If you really want to interact with your pet then you can simply feed the animal treats and allow it to walk around your home
Once your pet gets used to you then it won’t become scared when you pick it up, but the animal getting used to you will take a while.
When you do pick your pet up handle it very calmly and pick it up very gently. Pick it up for only a few seconds at first to get the animal used to it.
Also, hold your pet in water where it is more comfortable, or, hold it but allow it to push on your arm so its feet aren’t waving around looking for something to touch
