Why is my budgie flying in his cage?
Odd behavior in your bird should be investigated.
The odd behavior may not necessarily mean that there is something wrong, but it can sometimes mean that there is something wrong.
Here is why your budgie is flying in his cage:
It feels trapped:
If your bird is at an age where it knows how to fly then it likely misses the freedom of flight and is trying to fly in the cage.
The bird will try to get this feeling by flying back and forth and around its cage.
What to do:
You can give your budgie some freedom by letting the bird out of its cage.
Doing this from time to time, for a couple of hours each session, should get your bird to stop flying in its cage
You can also entertain your budgie by training him while he is out of the cage as well as allowing the bird to explore, and play, after the training time
Exercising wings:
If your budgie is flying in place, on its perch, while in the cage then the bird is likely just exercising its wings.
This wing flapping gets the blood flowing and is usually done in the morning after stretching from a long night’s sleep.
A budgie who is doing this may not necessarily be bored, it may simply be a bit stiff and tired of having its wings down
What to do:
This is also normal behavior and is a sign that your bird needs some time to fly, out of its cage, and really use its wings
Let your budgie out on a regular basis and let the bird use its wings to its heart’s content.
Fear:
If your bird occasionally flies around its cage, erratically, then the bird may have been startled by something.
Because budgies are so small they are always on high alert and are easily startled.
Things that may startle your budgie include loud noises, shadows, your domestic pets, and people that the bird has never seen before
What to do:
If your bird is flying around in its cage then quickly cover the whole cage, or cover all but one side of the cage.
If the bird doesn’t see the threat anymore then the bird will calm down.
Remove the threat from the room and then lift the cover so the bird can see that there is no threat around.
Night frights:
This is similar to the above but happens at night. Budgies can’t see very well at night and this makes them even more fearful.
If your bird is startled by something at night then the bird will start to fly erratically in its cage out of fear.
What to do:
If your bird is woken up at night, then leaving a low illuminating night light in your bird’s room will help it see that there is no threat in the area.
What may also help is installing blackout curtains to keep outside light from coming in.
Keeping your bird and your other domestic pets in different rooms, and keeping noises at a minimum, especially at night, should help.
