Why is my chicken’s face red?
If your bird’s face isn’t normally red and the bird’s face starts taking on a redder color, then you’d understandably be confused and concerned.
Here is why this may be happening with your bird:
Hormonal changes:
Chickens have hormones just as humans do and these hormones affect how the birds act and how the birds look. So, the color of your bird’s face is closely related to what is going on with the bird’s hormones.
A mature bird that is in “full flush” (when the birds become ready to lay eggs more frequently) will develop a redder face than it usually has because of the fluctuations in the reproductive hormones in the bird’s body.
This redder face simply means that the bird is likely going to lay some eggs quite soon.
The bird’s face will flush from a red to a lighter pink, this color change happens quickly and may happen throughout the day. This is normal.
Another sign that indicates that the bird is about to lay eggs is crouching as you approach them.
What to do:
This is quite normal behavior and is not something that you’d need to worry about. In fact, the bird doing this is good as it indicates that it is maturing properly and about to lay eggs.
Assertion:
Another reason why your bird’s face may be red is that the bird is trying to assert itself, this is usually done in the presence of a weaker bird to show dominance.
The face of the more dominant will quickly go from red back to its normal pale pink color. The face of the submissive bird will go paler in color.
What to do:
This is also a normal occurrence between your two birds and is not something that you need to be worried about.
