Why Is My Duck Making Weird Noises (4 Weird Duck Noises + When To Worry)

Ducks don’t only quack, these birds make a variety of different noises, and some of these noises may sound quite weird to humans especially if you don’t know what these noises mean.

This article explores why your duck may be making weird noises.

Why is my duck making weird noises?

Your ducks can surprise you from time to time, they can surprise you by how they act or what sounds they make.

Some of these noises are normal and aren’t something to worry about but some sounds need to be worried about

Here are a few weird noises that you may hear ducks making:

Bark squeak:

One of the weirder noises that your ducks may make is a sort of bark or bark squeak noise. This usually indicates that the bird is talking with its mouth full.

Ducks will sometimes talk with their mouth full out of excitement about what they are eating, this makes a sound like a dog bark or a squeaky yip of a dog.

This will more often than not happen when the bird eats something particularly dry, or has entered into an environment with a lot of dry things like dry manure, or dry leaves, but this isn’t always the case.

Honking:

In addition to the normal quacking sound that ducks make these birds will also start to make honking sounds on occasion.

A duck that is honking does so for a couple of reasons, she could be honking to let her mate know where she is so he can come to her, or, she can honk as a way of her calling out for her mate.

Another reason why your female duck may honk is to let other female ducks in the flock know that she has chosen a mate out of the male ducks to mate with

Hissing:

Another of the sounds that ducks make is a hissing sound.

If your duck is hissing then the bird is likely doing this for one of two reasons:

It could mean that your male duck is trying to court a female duck, or, it could mean that there is a predator or a threat nearby and the duck is trying to ward off this predator or threat.

If your male duck is trying to impress and court the female duck, then he will puff up while hissing.

Groaning:

Groaning in humans is usually a sign of some sort of distress and the same can be said for a groaning duck.

A groaning duck is trying to communicate that it is frustrated or stressed about something.

When to worry:

All the above sounds that your duck makes are quite normal and you don’t have to worry about them.

As long as the bird is breathing normally, her eyes look normal and clear, she is active, and her behavior is normal overall then the bird is fine.

You’d only have to worry if the bird starts to show signs of distress or illness. If this is happening then take the bird to the vet.
