Birds are very attentive toward their eggs and their young, they are also very protective over their young and will not let you near them. But how do birds act around their infertile eggs?
This article is a look into whether or not a budgie will sit on infertile eggs.
Will a budgie sit on infertile eggs?
We as humans know that if a bird’s egg is infertile then there is zero chance of the egg hatching and producing a chick.
But, do budgies know when their eggs are infertile and know not to sit on these eggs?
The answer to this question is: sometimes. Sometimes your budgies will sit on infertile eggs and sometimes the birds will not.
If the eggs are infertile, and the budgie doesn’t realize it, then the bird will sit on the eggs and try to incubate them.
The mother will only realize that the eggs are not going to hatch later on in the incubation process and will get rid of them once she realizes this.
In other cases, the mother budgie will know early on that things are simply not quite right with the egg and will know that the egg won’t hatch.
The budgie will not sit on these eggs and the mother will not fuss or fight in this case, she will simply remove the egg from the nest and incubate the rest of the eggs.
Knowing that something is wrong early on is more common in experienced egg-laying budgies. Less experienced budgies will not usually realize early on that their eggs are bad.
What to do with an infertile egg?
The mother bird will get rid of the infertile egg as a way of keeping them from rotting and affecting the other eggs, you should throw the eggs out for the same reasons.
If left alone in the nest then bacteria will move through the eggshell and infect the inside of the egg.
This bacteria will not only cause the egg to produce a horrible smell, but the eggs will also start leaking a horrible-smelling liquid too.
The best way to deal with this is to simply throw the egg away outside and seal your trash bins so stray animals can’t get into it
