Yellow Stuff Coming Out Of Chicken (3 Reasons Why + What To Do)

Feeding chickens good healthy foods, making sure that they have regular dust baths, and allowing them to forage for food outside is a good way to raise chickens but it will not necessarily ensure that your bird will live a long healthy life.

Chickens can get sick, if there is yellow stuff coming out of your chicken you’d be right to worry, this article looks at why this happens

If yellow stuff is suddenly coming out of your chicken then it is likely laying soft-shelled (or no shelled) eggs, it has vent gleet, or, it has egg peritonitis

Yellow stuff coming out of chicken:

Soft shelled eggs

Chickens don’t always produce eggs with the hard protective shell that we’re used to. Sometimes, a chicken will lay eggs with a soft shell or, the bird will produce a shell-less egg.

If your bird is leaking what looks like a mixture of raw egg, then this is likely the case.

No shell eggs are common with birds who are just starting to lay eggs.

Other reasons why your bird may be laying shell-less or soft-shelled eggs is because there isn’t enough calcium in its diet, because it was frightened by a predator, because it is stressed from molting, or because it is in an environment with too high temperatures.

What to do:

You can help the bird lay eggs with shells, or lay eggs with harder shells, by adding calcium to your bird’s diet. Do this by feeding the bird crushed oyster shells, or crushed eggshells

Crush the eggshells very well, if you don’t, and the bird recognizes that it is eating eggshells, then the bird will eat its eggs in the future.

Keep an eye on the bird to see if it develops an infection in its vent. If it does develop an infection, it can die if not treated.

You can flush the bird out to prevent an infection.

To do this, make a solution by mixing one tablespoon of vinegar and 1 quart of water. Add this mixture to a syringe without a needle.

After that, insert the syringe into the bird’s vent and flush. The liquid in the bird’s vent may or may not flow out, both are normal

Egg peritonitis:

Egg peritonitis is another ailment that can cause yellow stuff to come out of eggs. E Coli can make its way into the bird’s oviduct, cause an infection, and egg peritonitis can develop.

Egg peritonitis will cause eggshells to break, the yolk from the eggs will build up in the bird’s body and it will eventually spill out of your bird.

This ailment can cause the bird to produce yellow droppings as well.

The yellow stuff that you are seeing may be the yellow droppings, or, it may be the yolks coming out of the bird. Another symptom of this ailment is a swollen abdomen.

What to do:

If the illness is mild, then you’d need to offer the bird supportive care, supportive care includes hand-feeding the bird supplements and anti-inflammatory medication.

If the ailment is further along, then the vet may recommend antibiotics and even a hospital stay

You can prevent this ailment from developing in your other birds by ensuring that the bird’s coop has good ventilation and is clean. Giving the bird foods with probiotics, like yogurt, will also help to keep infections at bay.

Vent gleet:

Another ailment that can negatively affect your bird is vent gleet. This ailment develops when the bird’s cloaca becomes infected by a fungus and becomes inflamed.

If the bird has vent gleet you will see a yellow to white discharge coming from the bird’s vent.

A number of things can cause vent gleet, parasites irritating the cloaca, a fungal infection in the bird’s body, a bacterial infection, or a ph imbalance in the bird can all cause vent gleet.

Other signs of the bird suffering from vent gleet is a decrease in egg-laying, duller feathers, and a bloated abdomen,

What to do:

Prevention is better than cure in this case, You can prevent your bird from developing this ailment by making sure your bird’s diet is healthy and well-balanced.

Make sure that the bird’s diet is not full of treats, make sure that you’re feeding the bird the right food for its age, ensure that the bird eats enough grit, and give your bird some probiotics every few weeks.
