Water is life, in the same breath, water can be quite dangerous, even in small quantities. It can make chicks choke.

This article is a look into what to do if your chick is choking on some water.

Baby chick choking on water:

When your baby chick is choking on water immediate action is needed.

Here is what to do if your baby chick is choking on water:

Remove the water source:

Your bird may be choking on some water while still drinking the water. If the bird is doing this then remove the water source.

Lift your chicks head:

Lifting the bird’s head can help get air into the bird’s throat and help it breathe better.

Lift the head only slightly and don’t be forceful when doing this.

Check the throat:

Take a look into the bird’s mouth to see if there is anything else that the bird may be choking on, like some food or a feather.

If there is an object stuck in the baby bird’s throat then you can try to get this out using a pair of tweezers.

Heimlich maneuver:

If the bird is still choking on the water, then you may have to perform the Heimlich maneuver on your bird.

To make this baby bird appropriate, you would need to position your fingers around the bird’s waist and pull and thrust upwards towards the bird’s head.

Doing this should help any water, stuck in your bird’s throat, come up.

Seek medical attention:

If your baby chick is still choking on the water, after you’ve tried the above solutions, then you’d need to get the bird to a vet, an avian vet preferably, to get the water out.

Tip:

Whatever you do, don’t start freaking out if your baby chick is choking on water.

You’d need to stay cool, calm, and collected while helping the bird.

If you start to freak out the baby chick will pick up on this and start to freak out too.

Both of you freaking out will only make matters worse.
