Budgie squeaking when sleeping:
If you’re around your budgies during the day then you likely hear these birds making a variety of noises including whistles, chirrups, trills, chatter, and squeaking, but the squeaking at night may be new to you. Here are the reasons why this happens:
Sleep talking:
This is more common in baby budgies, while budgies cannot talk they can squeak in their sleep.
As young budgies interact with adult budgies they pick up the communication patterns of older budgies and start squeaking too.
They will also squeak when they sleep as they process what is going on during the day.
What to do:
You don’t have to worry about a budgie who squeaks in its sleep, this is quite a normal thing to do for these birds even if it is quite loud and disturbs your sleep.
The squeaking is all a part of owning and raising these little creatures.
If the birds are making too much noise for you then you can try to move the bird to the farthest side of your house, however, whoever is sleeping on that side will have to endure the squeaks at night.
Avoid trying to bother the birds at night, budgies sleep very lightly and these birds aren’t used to things bothering them at night and will be startled if you spook them.
If you do spook them the bird will start frantically flying around in its cage and may injure itself in the process.
The bird will even wake up when you get into the room to try to avoid doing this.
It feels threatened:
If your budgies are squeaking in the middle of the night then they may feel threatened and may start to squeak out of fear as well as squeak to warn any other budgies that there is a threat around.
The birds may also start flapping around in their cages if the threat is close by. Animals that your budgie perceives as a threat can include your common household domesticated dogs and cats.
Your cats and dogs may try to play or attack the budgie due to their predatory instinct but the bird will not see this as playing and will be quite terrified.
What to do:
If the birds are squeaking because there is a threat in the area then you would need to keep your budgies and your domesticated dog or cats in separate rooms at night where each cannot see the other.
When to go to the vet:
If none of the above reasons are behind your budgie squeaking then you may have to take your bird to the vet to figure out what is really going on with your bird.
Birds try their best to not show signs of being in distress, if the bird can’t help but show signs of being in distress then the bird is likely quite far along and needs medical attention as soon as possible.
