Chicken’s Poop Is Clear Like Jelly (2+ Reasons Why + What To Do)

Chickens usually produce a brown poop with white urates on it but the color of this bird’s poop can change if something is going on with the bird.

Sometimes your chicken may produce poop that is green, yellow, or even clear. If you’re wondering why your chicken’s poop is clear, like jelly, then this article will be of help to you.

Chickens poop is clear like jelly:

A change in your chicken’s poop is a sign that there is something going on with your bird, below are possible reasons why your chicken is producing poop that is clear like jelly:

Infectious bronchitis:

Infectious bronchitis is a fast-spreading disease that can infect chickens. This is a highly contagious upper respiratory tract disease that causes a variety of symptoms, one being that it causes the bird to produce a clear, watery, jelly-like poop.

Symptoms of this disease, in addition to the change in poop, include coughing, respiratory distress, a watery discharge produced by the bird’s eyes and nostrils, and fewer eggs being laid.

The respiratory symptoms develop because there is mucus in the bird’s trachea which causes the bird to cough, gasp, and sneeze.

What to do:

A variety of other diseases share signs of this disease so you’d need to get your bird to the vet where the bird will be examined and professionally diagnosed.

Your vet may offer your bird a course of antibiotics to treat any secondary bacterial infections that it may develop, but unfortunately, there is no specific treatment for infectious bronchitis in chickens.

It is said that increasing the temperature of the room that your bird is in, by 5 degrees Fahrenheit, will help the bird recover until the symptoms subside

Coccidiosis:

If your bird has clear jelly-like mucus in its poop then your bird may have coccidiosis.

This disease will develop in your bird if the bird becomes infected with a single-celled organism (a protozoa) called coccidia. This parasite attaches to the bird’s intestinal lining and damages it.

The individual strains of this disease attack birds differently so different birds will have different symptoms, but one major sign of this illness is mucus in the bird’s poop.

Other signs of this illness in birds include bloody droppings, emaciation, a lack of appetite, general droopiness, and diarrhea.

What to do:

Taking your bird to the vet to be examined and diagnosed is the recommended approach.

The vet will perform a fecal test on your bird to find out if the bird has this disease, if it is found that the bird does in fact have this disease, then the vet will prescribe medication for the bird.

This disease can be treated with Amprolium, Amprolium keeps the parasite from multiplying in your bird. You can add this treatment to your bird’s water

You’d need to give the bird additional vitamin B1 after the Amprolium treatment because this vitamin will be lost during the Amprolium treatment.

Other reasons:

In addition to the two illnesses mentioned above, the bird may be releasing clear poop because the bird is taking in too much water and is now overhydrated.

Overhydration can develop in your bird if the weather outside is too hot and the bird feels the need to take in more water to cool off.

Eating foods with a high water content like watermelon, cucumbers, celery, or iceberg lettuce, can also cause the bird to produce clear poop.

In addition, if the bird is stressed, because it does not have access to food, or, if it is suffering from shipping stress then the bird may produce clear poop.

A diet that is too high in protein can also cause the bird to produce watery poop.
