How to save a choking chick:
You’d need to be very gentle when trying to save a choking chick while still doing what takes to save the bird.
Here is what to do:
Use tweezers:
Start by opening the bird’s mouth to check if you can see what is causing the blockage.
Once you’ve opened the bird’s mouth, carefully reach in and grab the object using a set of tweezers.
These birds are small so a pair of tweezers is usually small enough to reach in and remove the object.
Be gentle when doing this as you can easily injure the bird’s throat if the tweezers scrape the bird’s throat.
Tilt the bird:
You can alternatively use gravity to help get the blockage out of the chick’s throat.
To do this, tip the bird over so its whole body is facing down. Don’t restrict the birds head as you do this.
Once tipped over, the blockage should come out thanks to gravity.
Get the bird to the vet:
If you can’t remove the blockage in your chick’s throat at home then taking your bird to the vet, or even better an avian vet, is the next best thing.
The vet will have the knowledge and the skills needed to remove the blockage in the bird’s throat.
