My parrot is not active
Parrots are quite clever, have the ability to bond with us, are playful, and, are social.
However, not all parrots will be this way all of the time. Here is why your parrot is not active:
It’s the bird’s personality:
Just as humans do, your parrots have personalities of their own and some of your parrots will not have a very playful or active personality.
These birds will prefer to be alone and sit for most of the time.
They will only choose to play with you, or with the other birds, on occasion.
What to do:
This is normal for some birds, some birds will be very active and others not so much
As long as your bird has been this way since the beginning of its life, and isn’t suddenly isolating itself and not being playful, then you don’t have to worry, the bird is fine.
If the bird was previously playful, and is not too active nowadays, then you may need to start to worry.
The bird is scared:
Scared humans will not want to draw attention to themselves by being too active, the same is true for a scared parrot.
Your parrot being active around you is a sign of the bird being comfortable around you.
The bird not being playful around you may mean that the bird is uncomfortable or even scared around you.
If you’ve just taken your parrot home from the pet shop then it will likely be afraid of you because it is in a new environment and it sees you as a threat
What to do:
The bird will get used to you over time and will start being active and playful the more it gets used to you and gets used to being in your space.
You can help your parrot get used to you, and get used to being in your space, by spending time with it and giving it treats.
Illness:
Another reason why your parrot is not being active may be that the bird is ill.
If it is common for your parrot to be active, if playing, and being loud is normal for the bird, and it suddenly changes its personality, then this may mean that the bird is ill.
Parrots who drew attention to themselves in the wild, when ill, were targeted because predators could see that they were sick.
For this reason, a sick bird would become less active and will lay low to keep predators from targeting it.
Your domesticated bird still has the same survival mechanisms and this may be why your parrot is suddenly not being so active.
What to do:
A sick parrot will start showing other signs of being sick, these signs are further confirmation that your bird is sick.
If you think that your bird is sick, then you can try to diagnose the bird yourself, or, you can take the bird to the vet.
Your bird will likely only start showing signs of being ill when its condition is advanced.
If your bird’s illness is advanced, then you’d have a medical emergency on your hands and your bird likely needs to be seen by a vet.
Isolate the bird with its own food and water until you can get the bird to the vet
