Should I leave the radio on for my budgie?
We know that budgies don’t like to be left alone and don’t like to be bored but you can’t sit with the bird and entertain them all day, but what you can do is use other methods of entertainment, like the radio, to occupy your bird.
Budgies and the radio
Yes, you can leave the radio on for your budgie when you aren’t with it and this is especially recommended if there are no other birds that the budgie can entertain itself with.
Not only is this beneficial in this way, but having the radio on will mimic the experience of having sound all around in the wild, in fact, having no sounds on in the wild means that there is something wrong.
The bird will enjoy listening to the radio and will even join in and chirp along to the music if there is a song on that it likes.
Check your bird’s reaction to see if the bird likes the song you’re playing. The bird will other try to mimic the sounds on the radio or will try to word them but sounds won’t come out of their beaks.
The same effect can be achieved by switching on the tv and letting your bird watch and listen to what is on. This will keep the bird’s company and help them learn new words.
Tips when doing this:
Choice of music:
Different birds like different types of music being played during the day, some will like the loud and exciting sounds of pop, techno, or rock, and some birds will prefer the sounds of nature being played all day.
Try different types and see which your bird reacts well to. However, if your bird seems stressed by any of the music that you play you can simply turn the radio off.
Squawking is a sign of stress and so is screaming, self-plucking, cutting themselves with their beaks, and lunging.
Sleep time:
While budgies can live with some noise on during the day, it is advised that you switch the radio off at night to allow these birds to sleep peacefully.
If there is noise around then the bird will have difficulty resting. So, make sure that the sounds around them are quieter than the sounds playing during the day.
If there are loud and startling sounds at night then the bird may become startled and wake up as the bird will think there are predators in the area and the bird will become stressed out.
Lulling the bird to sleep:
The loud and sudden noises that suddenly come from your radio may startle your birds but certain sounds can actually lull your bird to sleep.
Sounds that do this include soft piano and violin sounds that have no dramatic change in the song. Avoid jarring music like pop, hard rock, or anything that can startle the bird.
