What To Do If Budgie Beak Is Too Long? (3 Solutions)

Everything in nature evolved over time to benefit itself.

Carnivores have strength and strong teeth to rip into prey, fish have fins to swim well and birds have strong beaks to crack nuts and other foods, but what happens if your bird’s beak gets too long?

This article looks into what to do if your budgie’s beak is too long.

What to do if budgie beak is too long?

A bird with an overgrown beak is actually not that uncommon in birds, budgies included.

This overgrowth can keep the bird from eating which can lead to starvation. This is why acting quickly, if your bird’s beak is overgrown, is so important.

Here is what to do if your bird’s beak is overgrown:

Figure out the problem:

Birds who are healthy and have ways to maintain a healthy beak length don’t generally develop overgrown beaks.

Knowing this, if your bird’s beak is overgrown then there is likely a reason behind this.

The reason behind this may be a lack of abrasive surfaces that the bird can rub and file its beaks against.

An overgrown beak can also develop because of chronic liver disease or scaly face mites.

Take the bird to the vet:

If you find that the bird’s beak is too long, because the bird doesn’t have access to surfaces that it can file its beak down on, then this can be rectified at home.

If the bird’s beak is too long, because the bird is sick, then you’d need to take the bird to the vet.

Once at the vet, the vet will ask for your bird’s history when it comes to any injuries, diet, and general care.

The vet will also physically examine the bird and run some tests on the bird.

Once the reason behind the overgrowth beak has been identified your bird will be given medications for its condition.

The vet will also trim your bird’s beak.

It is not recommended that you trim the bird’s beak yourself if you don’t have extensive experience of how to do this.

Your budgie’s beak is partially supplied with blood. If trimmed incorrectly then the trimming may cause a lot of bleeding.

It is only advised that a vet, or a very experienced bird owner with extensive knowledge of beak trimming, trim the bird’s beak.

Get the bird beak grooming toys:

Budgies will naturally groom their beaks to a manageable and healthy length as they eat hard foods in the wild.

They will also rub their beaks against abrasive surfaces in the wild, filing it down, as a way of getting it to a manageable length.

If your bird’s beak grows too long, because it has no toys to groom its beak with, then you may want to consider giving the bird some beak grooming toys after it comes back from the vet.

Doing this will help maintain the bird’s beak length. Cuttlebone can be used to maintain the bird’s beak length and so can wooden toys.

Letting your bird eat foods, like nuts and seeds, will also help to maintain the beak.
