Why can’t my budgie fly high?
Flying high is normal and natural for birds, it helps them escape predators and find food and shelter from above.
If your bird can’t fly high then you’d understandably be worried. Here is why this may be happening:
Wing clipping:
One of the reasons why your bird may not be able to fly high is that the bird’s wings have been clipped.
Wing clipping is done strategically to limit the bird’s ability to fly. This keeps them from flying away.
Flight can still happen, but the bird won’t be able to fly very high.
The other benefits of clipping, apart from the bird not being able to fly away, is that it keeps the bird from flying out of openings like windows and ceiling fans as well as ensuring a dependence on humans when training
What to do:
Your bird not being able to fly high after wing clipping is perfectly normal and is what you’d want from this procedure.
If you want your budgie to fly high in the future then let the bird’s new feathers grow in and don’t get the bird’s wings clipped.
Your budgies’ clipped wings should grow back in about 6 to 18 months
In the meantime, make sure that the budgie’s environment is enriching and stimulating.
In addition, make sure that your budgie gets regular exercise until its wings have fully grown in and the bird can fly high again.
Obesity:
Obesity can affect a variety of animals, including budgies.
A lack of exercise, giving your bird a high-calorie diet, or, giving your bird a healthy diet but overfeeding it can cause obesity in the bird.
Your budgie will likely not refuse food, even if it already ate enough.
This is a survival mechanism, animals will overeat and put on weight in case food becomes scarce in the future.
So, if your bird is being given too much food, or is given high calorie foods, then it may become obese.
Your little budgie’s wings will only work well, and allow the bird to fly high, if the bird is at a healthy weight.
If the bird is overweight then your budgie may have issues flying high because its wings can’t carry it.
What to do:
Your bird’s obesity can be cured with diet and exercise.
When it comes to food you’d need to make sure that your budgie is eating the appropriate amounts of food and the appropriate calories.
Your budgie’s diet should consist of a mix of pellets, vegetables, and small amounts of fruit.
Limiting your bird’s treats is recommended.
When it comes to exercise, allow your budgie to fly outside of its cage. This flying may happen in a room of your house, or outside.
Be sure to bird proof your house while the bird is out flying and constantly supervise the bird as it flies.
