Why Does My Budgie Keep Looking Up (2 Reasons Why + What To Do)

Budgies can be very entertaining to their owners, they are great companion birds but they can also act oddly and worry you.

If your budgie keeps looking up you may become worried about the little bird. This article looks into why this happens.

Why does my budgie keep looking up?

If your budgie does one odd thing, like looking up, on occasion, then you likely won’t start to worry about the bird or even notice this odd behavior.

But, if this odd behavior becomes frequent you may start to worry.

This is why your bird may be doing this:

Vitamin deficiency:

Your bird’s diet is usually one of the more common reasons why the bird falls ill or has issues.

A budgie who is constantly looking up may have a vitamin deficiency.

What to do:

Supplementing vitamins into your budgie’s diet will help if your bird has a vitamin deficiency.

You can do this by adding more nutrient-rich food into your bird’s diet, in addition to its well-rounded feed, or, you can add bird supplements into your bird’s diet.

These supplements, or, the added nutrient-rich foods, will help the bird meet its recommended daily dietary vitamin needs.

This will help get the bird’s body functioning normally again.

Supplement the vitamins for one week and see how the bird reacts.

You can alternatively get the bird to a vet, or better yet, an avian vet.

The vet will run tests on the bird to see what vitamins and minerals the bird is lacking.

Poisoning:

Another reason why your bird may be throwing its head back and looking up may be that the bird is suffering from some sort of poisoning, like heavy metal poisoning, or aflatoxin poisoning.

Aflatoxins are poisons that are produced by a fungus called Aspergillus flavus.

If your budgie was exposed to this toxin then the poison may cause the bird to act oddly and constantly look up

Budgies are very small birds so a small amount of heavy metals can cause very dramatic effects on your bird.

When poisoned, your bird’s body can’t properly respond to signals from its brain, this can cause incarnation and this will make the bird look up randomly.

What to do:

Lab testing is an effective way to determine whether your bird is suffering from poisoning, this is why taking your bird to the vet, or better yet, an avian vet, is the suggested solution.

If you can’t immediately get your budgie to the vet then isolate your bird if it is currently sharing a cage with other birds.

Isolating the bird will keep it from becoming stressed while ill.
