Why Is My Budgie Quiet And Sleepy (2 Reasons Why + What To Do)

Sleep is important for budgies, without sleep the bird will become stressed and its health will decline.

That being said, if your bird is acting too sleepy, and is quiet, then you’d understandably be worried.

This article looks into why this happens

Why is my budgie quiet and sleepy:

While budgies are known to be quite active and playful animals they do sleep a lot, these birds can sleep for 10-12 hours a day.

However, if your bird is sleeping more than this then you’d understandably be worried

Here is why your budgie may be quiet and sleepy:

The bird is sleep deprived:

The first thing that you may think of, if your budgie is sleepy and is quiet, may be that the bird is sleep deprived, and this may be true.

These birds will go quiet when there is something wrong and this something may be sleep deprivation.

This sleep deprivation may be happening because the bird isn’t getting enough sleep at night.

Bad sleep at night may happen because the bird is suffering from night frights, if its environment is too loud at night, or, if there is too much light in the bird’s environment at night.

What to do:

Figuring out why your bird is sleep-deprived will help you figure out how to help the bird.

This may entail staying up at night to observe the bird, how it sleeps, and its environment.

If you realize that the room that your bird is sleeping in is too illuminated then keep the lights off.

If light is coming in from outside then get blackout curtains.

If your household pets are disturbing your budgie at night then keep these animals in different rooms.

The bird should get a better night’s sleep once all of these disturbances are removed.

Illness:

Illness is another reason why your budgie may be quiet and may be more sleepy.

Budgies in the wild know that if they attracted attention to themselves, especially while sick, they could die.

Predators go for weak and sick prey because they are the easier prey to catch.

A sick budgie wouldn’t be able to get away as easily as a healthy budgie would.

Because of this, your sick budgie will stay quiet and not draw much attention to itself in case a predator is nearby.

The bird will also become more tired because all of its energy is being directed toward recovering and is not being directed towards being active and playing.

If your bird is sick then it will start presenting other symptoms depending on what the bird is sick with.

What to do:

Your sick budgie has likely been sick for a while and is only showing signs of being ill now that it can’t hide the signs.

If the bird can’t hide signs of being ill anymore then the sickness is likely quite far along and the bird desperately needs medical attention.

You can keep an eye out for any other signs of illness in your bird, and diagnose and treat the bird yourself, or, you can take the bird to a vet, an avian vet preferably, to have the bird diagnosed and treated.
