If you leave your dog or your cat for a week you’ll more than likely be able to come back and your pet will be as happy to see you as ever.
But, is this the same for birds? Will your bird forget you after a week? This article looks into it
Will my bird forget me after a week?
Getting a bird to get used to you can be a job in itself, birds see us as large weird animals and either don’t know what to think of us or are scared of us.
After the effort of getting the bird to get used to you, you may wonder if your bird will forget you after a week if you say, go on vacation.
The good news is no, a bird will not forget you after a week of being gone.
Birds have remarkably good memories so if a bird knows you, and loves you, the bird will feel the same way about you if you leave it alone for a week
Not only can you leave your bird alone for a week and it will remember you, but you can also leave the bird for months and even years at a time and the bird will remember you.
They have had to have good memories to remember who is a predator and who is not in the wild and they transferred this skill into their domesticated bird life.
This enables them to also remember the positive and negative emotions that they felt when they were around you. This allows them to form a stable emotional attachment.
If you do leave your bird for a long time just try to wear the same clothes and keep the same hairstyle when you come back around so as to not stress the bird.
The birds will however miss you while you’re away, this is equally true if you have a bird that is very social and is used to spending a lot of time with you.
They will be attached to you and will need some other person or another bird to socialize with while you are away.
You’ll know that the bird was stressed and lonely if it starts to peck itself while you are away.
But apart from this, the worst that will happen is that the bird will give you the silent treatment for a day or two, or a couple of days, but it will come right back to you after this.
Tips:
Interacting with your bird over FaceTime or call will be great for both of you, the bird will love to hear your voice and will definitely want to see you when it can.
Also, make sure that the bird doesn’t become stressed out while you’re away, and make sure that the person you’re leaving your bird with feeds the bird its regular food at a regular time and spends time with the bird.
