Baby Chick Bleeding From Vent (2 Reasons Why + What To Do)

Your chicken’s vent serves more than one purpose, it is used during reproduction and it excretes waste, so, if there is something wrong with the vent this can affect a lot of things.

If your baby chick is bleeding from its vent then you likely think that something is wrong with your bird, this article looks into why this may be happening

Baby chick bleeding from vent:

Baby chicks are fragile, the younger the baby chick is the more fragile it is and the more you need to make haste when dealing with any issues or illnesses that the bird has.

Issues including the baby bird bleeding from the vent. Here is why this may be happening with your baby bird:

Bullying:

One reason why your bird may be bleeding from its vent may be that the baby chick is being bullied by the other birds. The bird may be being bullied by birds of its own age or by bigger adult birds.

These birds are known to peck at each other and these pecks can result in an injury, pecking at the vent will certainly cause injury.

The vent is quite sensitive and even a minor peck can cause the vent to start bleeding.

What to do:

The baby bird may be being pecked because it is one of the smallest birds in the flock, this pecking is normal behavior and as long as the bird isn’t bleeding too much it will be fine.

That being said, if the bird is continuously being picked on for more than 30 minutes then you can intervene and remove the bully bird from the area.

You may also have to separate the bully bird from the flock.

The injuries will likely heal themselves or you can treat them by applying hydrogen peroxide or betadine to the bird’s vent and wrapping this area with a bandage.

The bleeding from the vent is usually not something to be concerned about unless there is a lot of blood flowing out

A very large dropping:

Another reason why your bird’s vent may be bleeding may be because the bird ruptured a blood vessel in the vent area and the vent is bleeding.

This can happen if the bird had recently laid a very large egg, which is unlikely if your baby chick is still young, or it can happen if the bird passed a particularly hard and large dropping

What to do:

This is quite normal and is not something that you should be worried about, this does happen to some chicks on occasion and as long as the bleeding is once off then the bird will be fine.

You would need to take the bird to the vet if the bird is consistently bleeding from its vent
