Quail Throat Movement (2 Reasons Why + What To Do)

Quails are known to be quite hearty birds, not much phases them and not many illnesses affect them, so if your quail bird starts acting out of the ordinary you know that something is going on with your bird.

This article looks into why your quail’s throat may be moving.

Quail throat movement:

Any movement that seems bizarre and out of the ordinary for quails, like odd throat movement, may be concerning to you as a quail raiser.

This behavior may not necessarily mean that there is something wrong with the bird but it may still worry you.

Here is why your quail may be making odd throat movements:

Settling in for a nap:

If your bird’s neck seems to be trembling a little, and its mouth is opening and closing, then the bird is likely about to take a nap.

What to do:

This is normal behavior and isn’t something that you need to worry about, the bird is simply settling in for a nap.

You only need to start to become concerned about this behavior if your bird starts to show signs of distress along with the throat trembling.

The bird is hot:

Another reason why your quail may be moving its throat may be because it is hot and it is panting.

If it’s too hot out, and the bird can’t find any other way of cooling itself, then the bird will start to pant to cool itself off.

The panting looks like the bird contracting its neck muscles very quickly. This panting movement moves air throughout the bird’s mouth and throat, over the membranes, and this helps to cool the bird down a bit.

What to do:

If the bird is overheating you can take action to help to cool it down. Start off by placing the bird somewhere cool and shaded.

Giving the bird fresh, clean, cool water to drink will help cool the bird and so will giving the bird refrigerated snacks to eat. All this should help the bird cool down.

If the bird is still moving its throat in this way, and seems to be in distress, then you may need to take the bird to a vet for an examination and possible treatment.
