Bird vomiting medicine:
Vomiting is a clear sign that something is wrong with the bird, this is not normal behavior and is something that you should be worried about. Here is why your bird may be vomiting its medicine:
Medication side effects:
Nausea and vomiting are side effects of a variety of human medications and the same is true for some bird medications.
Your bird may simply be suffering from the side effect of nausea because of the medication.
While regurgitation is normal in birds vomiting is not, vomiting in birds happens when food or materials that the bird eats and have moved past the bird’s crop into the bird’s stomach is forcefully expelled by the bird through its mouth.
The vomit that the bird produces contains acidic liquid which the bird will quickly try to spit out, along with the medication, as soon as it gets into the bird’s mouth.
Another reason why your bird’s medications may be causing the bird to throw up is that the bird is taking the medications on an empty stomach and this is making the bird sick and throw up.
What to do:
Taking your bird to the vet to get replacement medications, medications that the bird will not vomit out, is the recommended solution.
The vet will need you to explain the incident that caused the vomiting in order to understand the problem even further.
The vet may then change the medication that your bird is given. Your bird will be prescribed a different medication that will help with the bird’s initial sickness and won’t cause vomiting.
The vet may also give the bird medication to protect the bird’s intestinal lining.
Once you’re back from the vet, keep the bird in a warm environment as it recovers from the vomiting and recovers from its illness.
Also, give the bird its new medications and give the bird its vomiting medication as directed. Do this for as long as the vet prescribed them for, even if the bird’s symptoms appear to be gone.
Horrible taste:
Your bird may not be throwing the medication up but the bird may be spitting the medication out and this may appear as though the bird is throwing up when it takes its medication.
Your bird may do this because the medication tastes bad.
What to do:
Medications don’t always taste the best, if the reason why the bird is throwing up is that the medication tastes bad then you can make the medicine taste better in hopes that this will help.
If the bird was prescribed a liquid medication then you can give the bird its medication, plus some organic unsweetened (if not organic at least unsweetened) apple juice, to make it taste better.
