Budgie Sleeping Outside Cage (2 Reasons Why + What To Do)

We are used to budgies sleeping standing up, this may be unusual for humans but we’re used to it.

What you may not be used to is the bird sleeping outside of its cage.

This article looks into why your budgie may be doing this.

Budgie sleeping outside cage:

A budgie’s cage is its home, it’s where the bird eats, plays, and sleeps.

But, what if your budgie isn’t interested in sleeping inside its cage?

Here is why your budgie is sleeping outside its cage:

It likes spending time with you:

Your bird may not want to be in its cage because it likes spending time with you.

If your budgie is always wanting to be near you, then it likely doesn’t want to part with you, and likely doesn’t want to have to fly into its cage come bedtime

This is not good and the bird sleeping out of its cage is not recommended.

Your little budgie sleeping outside of its cage can be very dangerous.

Your domestic pets can get to it, it can get spooked and knocked into something at night, or it can fall and land on the floor.

So, getting your bird to sleep in its cage is a must

What to do:

You can leave treats in your bird’s cage to get it to fly into the cage and stay there.

If the treats don’t immediately get the bird back in then leave food in the bird’s cage for a couple of hours before bedtime to try to get the bird in the cage.

Also, dimming the lights in the room, and then leaving a light in the cage, may get the bird to want to go back into the cage.

Dimming the lights will make the bird want to go back to its resting spot in the cage.

If your bird is not responding at all, and you’ve been trying to get the bird back for a while, then you can let the bird sleep out of the cage as a one-time thing,

Leave food and water out for your budgie to eat when it wants to eat.

If the bird doesn’t have access to food when it needs it then the bird may become hypoglycemic.

Waiting it out for too long, and not feeding the bird, is not recommended as birds can become hypoglycemic without food.

It doesn’t like the cage:

Another reason why your budgie may be sleeping outside the cage may be that the bird doesn’t like its cage.

Your budgie may be well aware that the cage offers food, water, and toys, but it may simply not like being in the cage.

Especially if they are new to being kept in the cage.

What to do:

Your bird will learn to like the cage and learn that it is a place of safety, you’d just need to let the bird sit in the cage.

Have a routine where you take your budgie and put it in its cage at the same time every night.

The bird will learn this routine and will soon settle into it

Help your budgie settle in by spending time with it while it settles in, this will give you two time to bond with each other.
