Letting Budgies Out Of The Cage For The First Time (6 Things To Do + Avoid)

Flying is important for budgies, it allows these birds to not only exercise, but it also allows the birds to feel free as well.

There are a few things that you’d need to keep in mind before letting your budgie out of its cage for the first time.

This article looks into it.

Letting budgies out of the cage for the first time:

Many will tell you that getting your budgie out and flying will be immensely beneficial for the bird, and this is true

If you want to let your budgie out of its cage, for the first time, then this is what you need to do and not do:

What to do:

Watching out for predators:

Because your budgie is so small, there are a variety of animals that may attack your bird while it is out of the cage.

Even domestic animals, like your dog or cat, may try to attack your bird.

For this reason, you’d need to make sure that your domestic animals are kept in a separate room from your flying bird.

Keep them away from plants:

While it is recommended that you let your budgie fly indoors, you can also let the bird fly outdoors.

When doing this keep your budgie away from plants.

This is recommended because some of the plants that your budgie may nibble on may be toxic to the little bird

Keep the temperature warm:

Budgies are small birds, and because of this, the temperature of their environment can greatly affect them.

Temperatures that are too hot, or too cold, are not good for budgies.

For this reason, you’d need to make sure that the temperature you keep the bird in is warm.

Switch off electronics:

Electronic appliances and birds don’t mix, so, make sure that these are turned off, unplugged, and ideally out away during budgie flying time

Keeping the laundry machine, stovetop, and ceiling fan, off will be best for your bird.

Close all doors and windows:

Budgies are quite curious birds, if you let your bird fly free of its cage make sure to close the doors and windows of the room that your bird is in.

Closing all openings will keep the bird from possibly flying out.

In addition to this, make sure that the mirrors of your home are covered as your budgie may fly into them if not covered.

It is also recommended that you close all toilet seats and lock away any household cleaning products when your budgie is flying.

Create a routine:

Budgies love routine, routines keep the birds calm and stress-free.

Your bird may become stressed once it is let out of the cage because it has never flown before.

To combat this, you let the bird out at the same time each day. The more you do this the more your bird will get used to it.

What not to do:

Avoid using a harness on your budgie.

While harnesses are not necessarily bad, using a harness on your budgie is not recommended.

Harnesses can and should be used on your bigger birds like your greys or macaws, however, because your budgie’s body is so small, it isn’t recommended that you use these devices on these little birds.

A harness will only weigh the little bird down making flying more difficult.
