What To Do When Budgie Eggs Hatch (With Parents Are VS Without Parents)

Baby birds are fragile, these birds can easily die within the first few days of being alive. You need to know how to take care of these birds in the first days of life to keep them safe

This article looks into what to do when budgie eggs hatch

What to do when budgie eggs hatch?

You may have hatched budgie eggs on your own in an incubator or you may be raising a budgie pair who recently hatched a clutch of baby budgies, this is how to take care of the babies in both situations.

If the parents are around

If the eggs hatch and the budgie parents are around then you don’t have to take care of the newly hatched budgies.

Budgies are quite good parents and as long as they have the correct resources available to them, you don’t have to help them raise their young.

In fact, if you try to help the birds raise their young, and you get too touchy-feely and too close to the bird’s young, then the parent birds will get upset with you as they have a strong sense of territory.

The parents will be able to provide warmth, food, and beneficial bacteria to the baby birds as they raise them.

If the parents aren’t around:

If the budgie babies hatch without their parents around, or if the parents reject the baby budgie, then you would have to take care of the bird yourself.

You would need to provide warmth and food to the birds yourself. The baby birds can be fed a nutrient-rich formula. These birds need to be fed every hour.

Make sure that the birds are warm and make sure that the bird’s formula is warm when feeding.

Make sure to take special care when handling the babies, especially during the early days. Be gentle and slow and support the bird’s head as you’re feeding as the neck cannot yet properly support the bird’s head

Keep the birds in a nesting box especially when they are very young as their environment can have a big effect on your baby birds’ health. The nest box will keep them protected from the harsh environment.

The nest box should be warm, but not too warm, and, try to keep drafts in the nest box at a minimum. Also, keep the nest box out of direct light and ensure that there is good ventilation in the nest box

You would also need to keep the nest box clean as the baby budgies can be very messy.

You can pull the babies and clean the nest box when they are away. Throwing the bedding out and adding new bedding will keep the nest box from getting too dirty.

Keep an eye on the birds making sure that the bird develops properly throughout their life, especially during the early days.

If the bird is not developing properly then you’d have to take the baby bird to the vet for an examination  and expert advice
