Chirping is very natural to birds, they chirp for various reasons and a bird will understand another chirping bird, here is why the birds chirp in the afternoon:
Ownership of a sleeping area:
Birds are affected by the changing of the light. When the day turns to night, during the late afternoon, your birds will start to chirp as they are about to go to sleep.
The birds will continue to chip during the afternoon into the evening, until the last rays of sunlight are gone.
The birds have their own “internal clock” that tells them when to sleep and when to wake up. The bird’s internal clock is the changing of light during the day.
The reason why a bird will chirp at this time is to show dominance over other birds and to claim their territory.
A show of dominance within birds is usually seen when two birds are fighting but it can also be seen with birds in the afternoon who are claiming an area as their own territory
In the case of chirping at night, a bird will chirp loudly to mark its territory and show ownership of the area that it chooses to sleep in, the bird also chirps to show that it is ready to guard its territory against others.
The chirping is meant to scare away any competition as chirping shows how strong and dominant a particular bird is.
This chirping will be heard by rival birds who may want to sleep in the same space but because notice has been put that this space has been claimed the rival birds will likely look elsewhere to sleep at night.
If rivals do come into the territory of a chirping bird then the bird will make a lot of noise to scare the other bird away and will even fight the bird if it comes to that.
When the night goes back to day, the bird will wake up and it will start chirping again.
