Why Is My Budgie Always Tired? (3 Reasons Why + What To Do)

Budgies are known to be quite playful and active birds.

They play and interact with each other and they play and interact with humans as well.

If your once playful budgie seems to always be tired then this article will help you figure out why.

Why is my budgie always tired?

Budgies are lovely companion birds, unfortunately, they can start to show worrying signs like always being tired.

Here is why your budgie may do this:

Illness:

A major sign that your bird is sick is the bird being more tired than usual and sleeping more than usual.

Birds who are sick will usually sleep with their feathers fluffed up to keep them warm.

Just as with humans, a sick bird requires more rest, the body needs more rest because it is directing a lot of energy towards ridding itself of the sickness.

This doesn’t leave much energy for the bird to use and be active.

Other signs of a sick budgie include a change in demeanor, unkemptness, being picked on by cagemates, and self-isolation.

What to do:

Tiredness is a symptom of many budgie diseases, you may get a better sense of what the bird is sick with as more symptoms show up.

You can try to diagnose your bird based on the symptoms it presents, or, you can take the bird to the vet for an examination, diagnosis, and, hopefully, treatment.

The second option is recommended as the vet will quickly diagnose the bird and treat the bird quickly.

Getting your bird to the vet is also recommended because the bird will try to hide symptoms of being ill.

By the time the bird starts showing symptoms it already needs medical attention and its illness is likely quite far along.

Malnutrition:

If your bird isn’t getting all the nutrients that it needs then the bird may become less and less active and may become tired more often.

What to do:

Not only will a malnourished bird be more tired, malnourished birds will also be more susceptible to disease and infections.

So treating the bird is a must.

You may have to reevaluate your bird’s diet to make sure that it is eating well.

You may want to consider feeding your bird avicakes, Nutriberries and pellets if the bird isn’t already eating these.

You may also have to take your budgie to the vet. The vet will run tests on your budgie to figure out what the bird is lacking.

Molting:

Another reason why your once energetic budgie may be tried all the time may be that the bird is molting.

Molting happens with all birds and can bring about a variety of behavioral changes, like being tired all the time.

Your bird’s feathers will start to fall off and fall to the bottom of the cage once it starts to molt.

This is your confirmation that the bird is molting.

What to do:

If you can tell that your bird is molting then you don’t have to worry, this is normal and natural.

You can make the bird’s molting experience smoother by misting the bird’s skin with water.

The bird’s skin is likely quite irritated because its feathers are falling off, misting the bird’s skin will help relieve this irritation.

You can also help the bird grow healthy feathers by giving the bird calcium and multivitamins during the molt.
