Why Is My Turtle Filter Making Noise? ?(4 Reasons Why + What To Do)

Turtle tanks are peaceful aquatic environments that are a safe haven for turtles, if however you start to hear noises from your pet’s filter then you may start to become confused

This article looks into why your turtle’s filter is making noise.

Why is my turtle filter making noise?

If you’re keeping turtles you likely want the animal to live in a peaceful and quiet environment, this can be ruined if the turtle’s filter starts making unexpected noises out of the blue

Here is why your turtle turtle filter is making noises:

Loose components:

If your pet’s filter is broken or loose then you may start hearing rattling or vibrations coming from the filter.

What to do:

You would either need to secure/fix the components of the filter or replace the filter completely.

If you want to secure/fix the components then make sure that the hoses, clamps, and casing as all securely fastened after the repair. Making sure they are secure will eliminate any unwanted noise.

The water level has dropped:

Another reason why you may hear noises from your turtle’s filter may be because the water level dropped.

If the water levels drop then you may hear sounds of water splashing back into the tank. This happens because the water falls a longer distance than is ideal.

The lower the water levels the quieter the sound of the water flowing out of the filter and hitting the water below will be, the higher the fall the louder the noise.

What to do:

The solution to this problem is to simply top up the water level to where the water doesn’t make a loud splash when it falls into the tank.

Also, keep checking the water level as it will go down as a result of evaporation.

Clogged filter dirty impeller:

Another common reason why your pet’s filter may be making noise may be because the filter is clogged.

If the impeller in your pet’s filter is damaged, or dirty, then this may be causing the noise.

What to do:

Cleaning these items out should help with the problem. Remove the filter from your pet’s tank and clean out all the parts. You can clean the impeller using a soft brush.

Don’t clean out the media, simply rinse it out in a container filled with tank water. Once rinsed put it back into the filter and put this back in the tank.

It is recommended that you wash the filter sponge/floss using a dechlorinator every month or so.

Banging:

You’ll hear a ruckus when using some filters because the base of some filters fill rattle against the glass causing a sound. Power filters or canister filters are known to do this.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that there is something wrong with the filter but this happening isn’t exactly ideal.

What to do:

Some filters have an adjustable foot on the filter and this can be adjusted to get the sounds to stop.
