Why is my turtle going crazy in the tank?
Sudden but brief bursts of activity in your pet turtle can be bizarre to see and if you notice that your turtle is constantly ramming the sides of the tank, swimming erratically, trying to climb out of its tank, or appears to be trying to signal that there is something wrong then you’d understandably start to worry
Here is why your turtle may be going crazy in the tank:
It is confused:
If you’ve just brought your pet home, and it seems to be going crazy in that tank, if it’s banging on the glass walls of that tank, then it is likely doing this because it doesn’t understand glass.
There is no glass in the wild so turtles aren’t used to this material. In addition, the enclosure that you’ve given your pet turtle is likely different in size from the enclosure from the pet store, it has different boundary limits.
So, if you put your pet turtle into a glass enclosure in your home it may hit the glass because it is confused as to why it can’t get out of the tank when there is no visible barrier around the tank
What to do:
The animal hitting the glass constantly is normal, the animals simply need time to get used to the boundaries of the enclosure. This is common in turtles and in other caged animals like birds
You just have to give your pet time to figure out that there is a barrier that it can’t go past.
Gravid:
Turtles don’t become pregnant like humans do, they become gravid. They start to produce eggs which will exit their body.
A gravid turtle will act kind of crazy in the tank. These animals will swim frantically and will dig holes all over the place.
These animals swim and dig holes all over the place because they are looking for somewhere to lay their eggs.
If your pet’s enclosure does not offer her a place to lay eggs then the animal will become concerned and will act crazy in the tank.
What to do:
You’d need to provide a good nesting spot for your pet turtle to lay eggs in. A good nesting spot is safe and is an easy place to dig.
You can fill some potting soil in a container and leave your pet in there for 3 to 4 hours a day and allow her to dig and lay her eggs.
What is also recommended is making sure that she gets a daily calcium supplement as well as a calcium block in her tank. Giving her a diet of leafy greens, pellets, and live prey or cooked meat is also important.
