How to stop pigeons nesting on sky dish:
Pigeons will not only poop on your sky dish, which will in turn cause damage to the dish because of the acidity of the bird’s poop, but their poop can also be dropped all over your property because they poop as they take off.
They can also cause your TV reception to go right in the middle of your tv show. There are a variety of ways to keep these birds away from your sky dish, this is how:
Bird spikes:
Bird spikes can deter a variety of birds, pigeons included, the great thing is that they can be attached to your sky dish.
There are bird spikes that need to be glued down using silicone, or nailed to a surface, but there are also bird spikes that can be attached to your sky dish using the zip ties that come with the kit.
Attaching these to your dish is an easy and long-lasting way to keep birds away.
Most sky dish suppliers sell bird spike kits as well, you can visit the place where you bought your dish and see if they have spikes that can be used on your particular dish.
Barbed wire:
Using barbed wire is an inexpensive, and very effective, way to keep pigeons away from your sky dish. This is just as effective as using bird spikes on the dish.
To do this, get some barbed wire from your local hardware store and wrap it around the LNB (low-noise block downconverter) arm of the dish, wrap the wire around the other parts of the dish as well.
Make sure to attach this wire quite securely to your dish to keep it from falling off.
This is an inexpensive and long-term solution, barbed wire can last several years outside.
Cable ties:
This method may require more effort on your part but it will work just as well as the above solutions. Get a bag of cable ties and attach them to the arm of your sky dish. These will irritate the pigeons as they try to rest and nest on the disk.
Attaching each individual cable tie to the arm of the dish may be time-consuming, but it will be worth it. As a bonus, cable ties last quite long as well.
The high-quality black cable ties will last for around 5 -10 years outside exposed to the elements. The white cable ties do not last as long as the black ones, the white ones usually last for about a year.
Bird deterrent statues:
Pigeons are afraid of birds of prey, like hawks. Securing a hawk statue, or a moving hawk toy, near your dish is recommended.
Because pigeons are smart, they will know that the hawk is not real unless the hawk makes noises or moves. Getting a fake hawk that makes noises and moves is recommended.
You may also want to move your hawk ever so often so that the pigeons think the hawk is alive. You can also use a moving fake snake in this case.
Create another place to nest
If pigeons keep coming to your dish, then they likely love being on your property and feel that it is a good place to nest and raise their young.
You can erect something similar to your dish close by to give the birds somewhere else to nest on. Doing this in addition to the above solutions will keep both you and the birds happy.
You may need to scare the pigeons away from the sky dish and leave them alone when they make their way to the other nesting site
Warning:
If you’re thinking of shooting at pigeons to keep them off of your dish you’d need to check with your local laws beforehand to see if shooting pigeons in your area is legal or illegal.
In addition, shooting may not be the solution, if you do manage to kill one pigeon, then other pigeons will simply inhabit the nest, or hang around your dish replacing the previous birds.
