You may be asking why your budgie has stopped eating his seed, this article looks into it

Why has my budgie stopped eating his seed?

While many birds aren’t the biggest fans of pellets, your bird will likely be very happy to eat seeds, until he isn’t.

Here is why this may be happening with your bird:

The seed is new:

Your budgie does not like sudden changes, if you’re giving the bird a new seed that it isn’t used to then the bird may not eat the seeds.

These little birds are quite weary of new foods, even of new seeds, and the seeds may not be very well received by the bird.

What to do:

If you want the bird to eat this new food then you can slowly start incorporating this new seed by mixing it, in small quantities, into the bird’s food.

The bird will learn to get used to the seed this way.

Eating the seeds in front of your budgie may also help it understand that this is food and is safe to eat.

The seeds have gone bad:

Another reason why your bird may not want to eat the seeds that you’re giving it may be that the seeds are bad.

In stores, seeds have a shelf life of about 6 months to 2 years, but, once you open them, they only last between 2 weeks to 6 months.

You may not know that the seeds are bad but your budgie may know and the bird may refuse to eat the seeds because of this.

What to do:

Consider opening a new pack of birdseed and giving them to your bird.

If your budgie eats these new seeds then you know to throw the old seed out.

The bird is sick:

When your budgie stops eating a food, especially a food that it typically enjoys, then this may indicate that the bird is sick.

One of the common signs of a sick budgie is a loss of appetite this may be what you’re seeing.

Some illnesses can also cause digestive pain which may make the bird not want to eat anymore.

If your bird starts producing discolored poop, or vomiting, then the bird may have digestive issues.

If your bird is sick then other signs of the sickness will soon show up in your little bird.

What to do:

If your bird’s health continues to deteriorate with no intervention then this illness may be fatal to your bird so medical care is necessary.

Unfortunately by the time your budgie starts showing signs of being ill, the budgie is already likely quite sick.

Budgies, and other birds, will try their best to hide signs of being ill.

You’ll only notice signs of illness in your budgie once the bird’s illness is quite far along and once your budgie can’t mask the signs of being ill.

If your budgie gets to this stage then it is recommended that you take the bird to the vet

In the meantime, give your bird other foods to eat, a budgie can die if it does not eat for more than 24 hours.
